What is an app?
An app is the abbreviated word for “application.”
Application is pronounced: ˌapləˈkāSH(ə)n/
Applications are programs or software that are designed or written to perform a specific task. An application is not necessarily written specifically for mobile devices. You can see many examples of applications which are created only for desktop computers because of memory requires or other software needed to interact with the program.
Applications are written using different programming code which interacts with the host environment’s operating system. For example, If I were a programmer and I want to create an app to sell to people on Google Play I would need to write my program to work with the Android Operating System. Google Play does not offer apps that are written in say Apple’s iOS operating system.

As far as mobile applications (e.g., smartphones, tablets, personal data devices, etc…) go the top 5 operating systems these apps are written in are as follows:

#1 OS: The Android Operating System

#2 OS: Apple iOS Operating System

#3 OS: The Windows Operating System

#4 OS: Amazon Fire Operating System
